Pall Rings, plastic

The Pall Ring is a generic random packing which provides a satisfactory solution to most mass transfer applications, i.e. absorption, stripping, scrubbing, coalescing and biomass filtration. Alkaline services should be avoided as they may produce foaming.

This packing can be manufactured in various thermoplastics materials from 16mm to 90mm in size.

The design of the Pall ring is dimensionally stable and operates at a low pressure drop with lower fouling susceptibility to those more complex random packings.

Raschig rings, metallic

Raschig rings are the 1st generation of random packing, consisting essentially of short lengths of tube or coiled strips, used in mass transfer applications. They are not generally recommended for new applications unless for specific purpose, due to the high pressure drop and lower mass transfer efficiency compared to newer packing types such as Pall rings.

GLP can supply Raschig rings in a wide range of materials and thicknesses on custom manufactured basis.

Saddle rings, metallic

Saddle rings are the latest generation random packing which provide low pressure drop, high hydraulic capacity and high efficiency. They are effective in both high pressure and vacuum applications. Advantages include high specific surface area, robust mechanical strength, and low cost. The monolithic construction of this packing overcomes the problem of “opening out” at the ends as can be experienced with older ring style packings such as Pall rings.

Due to the aerodynamic shape and high voidage, Saddle rings are resistant to fouling. Saddle rings are an excellent general-purpose packing with excellent mass transfer characteristics and mechanical stability, proven in applications worldwide.

Saddle rings are available in an array of sizes to provide multiple combinations of efficiency and pressure drop.

Hypak rings, metallic

The Hypak ring is the next generation of random packing which provides additional capacity whilst maintaining the same mass transfer efficiency as its equivalent smaller Pall Ring. This is achieved by producing a larger size ring with additional internal prongs.

The Hypak ring is suitable for various mass transfer applications such as absorption, stripping, distillation, heat transfer and wash zones.

This packing can be manufactured in various metals with different material thickness. Ring sizes range from 30mm to 90mm.

The design of the Hypak ring is dimensionally stable and operates at a low pressure drop with lower fouling susceptibility to more complex random packings.

CMR rings, plastic

The CMR is the 3rd generation of random packing, as compared to the 2nd generation Pall Rings, and 1st generation Raschig Rings. CMR packing has a unique design which tends to orient the packing in a horizontal plane, thereby providing more efficient gas and liquid contact with lower flow resistance and higher hydraulic capacity.

This packing can be manufactured in various forms of thermoplastic materials in sizes to suit many applications.

The mechanical design of the CMR is dimensionally stable and operates at a low pressure drop with lower fouling susceptibility due to higher packing voidage.

Starflake rings, plastic

The unique shape of Starflake ring random packing significantly reduces pressure drop while maximising hydraulic capacity and mass transfer efficiency with excellent mechanical strength. The Starflake is a development of the CMR packing and also designed to orient in a horizontal fashion within the packed bed, however it offers additional liquid drip points and is available in only a single larger size.

Starflake rings are well suited to applications such as larger diameter packed scrubbers and strippers, where reduced pressure drop is critical to minimising blower / fan operating costs, without compromising mass transfer efficiency and resistance to fouling.

Super Saddles, plastic

Super Saddles are the improved version of the original saddles and are designed to give enhanced internal gas and liquid distribution.

The unique scalloped design provides higher capacities, lower pressure drops and higher mass transfer rates compared to traditional saddles. They also serve to overcome the problem of nesting that is commonly encountered with ordinary saddles. Super Saddles are also available in ceramic materials and typically find their application in processes requiring high temperature and chemical attack resistance.

SM-type Structured Packing, metallic

GLP’s SM-type Structured Packing is supplied in modules consisting of parallel layers of corrugated and textured sheetmetal. Each layer is stacked with an alternating 90 degree orientation, resulting in excellent distribution of liquid and gas phases. Inclination angles available are standard Y-type (45°) and high throughput X-type (60°). Adjustable wall-wipers are included to prevent vapour and liquid by-passing packing at the vessel wall.

The GLP Sheetmetal Structured Packing range exhibits excellent performance characteristics including:

  • Large operating range with high separation efficiency at high F factors
  • Low pressure drop of 0.3 – 1.0 mbar per theoretical stage
  • Can operate with extremely low liquid loads of approximately 0.2 m3/m3/h

A high capacity variation of SM-type structured packing is available (the ‘HC’ range) offering 20% lower pressure drop with the same efficiency as standard structured packing.

This improvement is achieved by geometrically modifying the angle of the corrugations within the structured packing modules so that a vertical transition is made between each element, reducing the pressure losses associated with the change in flow direction at the interface of each layer.

SM-type Structured Packing, plastic

GLP’s SM-type Plastic Structured Packing is supplied in modules consisting of parallel layers of corrugated and textured plastic sheets. The design of the packing provides excellent distribution of liquid and gas phases with minimum pressure drop. Heat and mass transfer efficiency are maximised for a given unit volume.

Depending on the application, packing with specific surface areas from 70 to 500 m2/m3 may be used, optimising performance while minimising potential for fouling.

GLP’s WM-type Wire Mesh Structured Packing is supplied in modules consisting of parallel layers of corrugated and textured wire mesh gauze. Typically, these structured packings are used in lab or small-scale applications – packed column inside diameters from 300mm down to 25mm.
